    Overview:

For most leisure-seekers a picture-perfect postcard of a holiday in Kerala entails spectacular views of the sea, mesmerising sunsets, visits to cultural centres and historical sites of importance all topped off with an idyllic trip along the backwaters and this five-day thoughtfully curated package gives travellers just that experience.

Start your sojourn with an activity-packed two-day itinerary in Kannur. Succumb to the glittering views of the Arabian Sea offered from the Kannur Lighthouse and Cliff Walkway. Wake up early morning on day two to visit the Parassinikkadav Sree Muthappan Temple, located on the banks of the Valapattanam river for a traditional dance enactment of the Muthappam Theyyam. Revisit Kannur’s historical importance at Fort St. Angelo and understand why Kannur forged its reputation as a globally-recognised handloom hub with a stop at a weaving centre. No cultural immersion in the northern Malabar region would be complete without a stopover at the Kerala Folklore Academy and a Kalarippayattu centre, both of which are checked off the list in this package.

The third day of this package will see you proceeding towards Kasaragod. Enjoy a pit stop at Kunhimangalam, a village that is renowned for its bronze and bell metal craftsmanship, and then head onwards to the Kavvayi Backwaters. A shuttle ferry will transport you to this remote and beautiful island. The last leg of day three will see you checking in to your beach resort at Nileshwaram and you will be rewarded by a houseboat cruise along the Valiyaparamba backwaters. Spend the following day at leisure punctuated with visits to the majestic Bekal Fort, and an exhilarating kayaking adventure along the backwaters.
Allow your idyllic odyssey to culminate on the fifth and final day with a visit to Kerala’s only lake temple – the Ananthapura Lake Temple.

    Itinerary

    Day 1

    Kannur

You will be met and picked up from the Kannur International Airport/Railway Station and transferred to your accommodation, where you will spend the next 2 nights. Relax until late afternoon. Later in the evening, visit the Kannur Lighthouse .A climb to the top offers a bird’s eye view of Kannur’s splendid coastline. The Lighthouse also houses a small but well-maintained museum within its complex, which bears the distinction of being only the fourth of its kind in the country after Alappuzha, Chennai and Mahabalipuram. A gigantic optic used in the Lakshadweep Lighthouse during the 1885-1962 period, a 19th century double-wick lamp of Kannur Lighthouse, a huge fog-bell used to alert shipmen and a deep-sea buoy are some of the exhibits. Finish your day with a short visit to the Cliff Walkway, adjacent to the Lighthouse, for some spectacular views of the Arabian Sea. Soaking in a beautiful sunset is a definite bonus. Return to your hotel. Stay overnight in Kannur. (More activities can be planned for early arrivals)
    Day 2

    KANNUR

Early morning, you will be transferred to the Parassinikkadav Sree Muthappan Temple, located 40 minutes from Kannur town, on the banks of the Valapattanam river. Sree Muthappan is a personification of two divine figures – Thiruvappana and Vellattam but is worshipped as a single deity. For people in Kannur and surrounding areas, Sree Muthappan is the most revered deity. Unlike other temples, this temple does not make discriminations on the basis of religion, caste or creed – all visitors are welcome. The temple is also unique as it performs the ritual enactment of both the characters of Muthappan through a traditional dance known as the Muthappan Theyyam on a daily basis. Depending on your hotel’s location, head back to the hotel for breakfast or venture elsewhere on your own to sample the region’s local fare. Continue your day’s visit by heading to Fort St. Angelo. Built in 1505 by Portuguese, the Fort witnessed several historical battles and is considered an important historical site in South India. After lunch, stop at a handloom weaving center, to learn about Kannur’s handloom industry. Kannur’s association with the handloom industry dates back to the mid 1800s. Kannur produces arguably the best handloom products in the world with USA, UK, Australia and other European countries being major importers. You will be then transferred to Chirakkal to visit the Kerala Folklore Academy (the academy is closed on Sundays). Established by the Government of Kerala, the academy strives to revive, preserve and promote the rich folk art traditions of Kerala while also ensuring the welfare of folk artistes. The academy’s museum exhibits over 300 precious objects of folk art, including life-size replicas of various theyyams and patayani, folk and tribal musical and percussion instruments, farm implements and weapons. Stay overnight in Kannur.
    Day 03

    KANNUR TO NILESHWARAM

After breakfast, proceed towards Kasaragod. Stop at a small village of craftsmen, well known for their bronze and bell metal craft. This village, located just over an hour’s drive from Kannur is famous for its metal artisans who cast magnificent bronze lamps, sculptures and other items. Many temples in Kerala as well as the Mangalore and Coorg region of Karnataka have idols made of panchaloha (five metals) from here. Though there were over 100 families engaged in this craft, their numbers are fast dwindling. From here, head to Kavvayi Backwaters. Take the shuttle ferry to the island and spend a few hours in this beautiful island with very few inhabitants. Lunch will be organised at a local home. Continue on to Nileshwaram and check in to your beach resort. Come late afternoon, enjoy a private houseboat cruise on the Valiyaparamba backwaters. Stay overnight in Nileshwaram.
    Day 04

    NILESHWARAM

After breakfast, proceed to visit the Bekal Fort, the largest and most impeccably preserved fort in Kerala. Return to your resort for lunch and relax on the beach. In the evening, enjoy a kayaking adventure on the backwaters, meandering through the narrow mangrove forests. Stay overnight in Nileshwaram/Bekal.
    Day 05

    AIRPORT TRANSFER

In the morning, visit Ananthapura Lake Temple – the only Lake Temple in Kerala. A unique feature is the existence of a single crocodile in the temple tank, which guards the temple. It is harmless and eats only the prasada given by the temple priest. You will then be transferred to Mangalore airport.
